Advocacy is not just an association of professionals in jurisprudence, but the availability of this Institute indicates, first of all, that the society tends to be called civil.

Advocacy, being no part of the authorities, unites independent legal advisors, whose qualification is confirmed by the state via conferment of an advocate status.

Advocacy in Russia has existed since the judicial reform of Alexander II and, though there were difficult and frankly severe years in its history, the best representatives of the advocates’ corporation preserved its best traditions, passing them from generation to generation.

A Law «On Advocacy» has been in force in the Russian Federation since 2002, which confirmed its specific status and utmost importance for a lawful state.

Advocacy is aimed at assisting the citizens in fulfilling their constitutional right for a qualified legal assistance.

Rendering such an assistance, the advocate:

— preserves and follows the international standards and rules of the advocate profession;

— relies on the moral criteria and traditions of advocacy in his behavior;

— strictly follows the corporate discipline and professional ethics;

— cares about his professional and personal honor and dignity, keeping in mind that his behavior should bolster confidence in the Advocacy Institute in general and strengthen its authority in the society.
